When Surgery isn't an Option

Quite often, I get clients in looking to avoid surgery on XYZ. Barring cases of full tears, nerve compression at the level of the roots, or serious athletes unable to modify daily activities, this is often a very manageable request.

One of my favorite clients in this boat was a 60 something woman who was diagnosed with spinal arthritis and a rather severe spondylolisthesis at L4-L5.

Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which a fracture in the pars interarticularis eventually progresses to anterior slippage of one vertebrae over another.

She came into our first visit limping, unable to stand or walk without incredible pain, let alone move from one position to another. She had been living on NASIDs, taking an average of five Aspirin a day just to make it through.

Within one session her pain during standing and walking was entirely gone and she was at a 1/10 pain, down from a 10/10, when changing positions.

She was astounded.

"If we were alive in paleo times, the local villagers would be lining up at your cave for treatment," she said.

With a combination of treatment every two months and an exercise protocol designed to strengthen muscles to keep her more upright, she's been able to live a virtually pain free and NSAID free life ever since that first visit.

Don't go under the knife without first exploring other options. You never know what quality of life you'll be able to achieve with an open mind and a bit of patience and work.
